WHY I KEEP GOING OUT AFTER DARK

I went looking for stars.
What stayed was the road there.

I began by chasing clear skies. Over time, the drive, the waiting, the wind, the clouds, and the feeling of becoming small beneath it all became just as important as the stars.

A CONTINUING FIELD JOURNAL

GANGWON, KOREA · 2004

Night watch.

I grew up in Seoul, where the city kept most of the stars out of sight. During military service in Gangwon, night watch placed me beneath a rural sky I had never really known.

Shooting stars appeared often enough that I began looking up before anything else. I did not have this archive then. I only had the long hours, the dark, and the feeling that the sky was much larger than the city had allowed me to see.

Years later, the camera gave those nights a way forward—through American deserts, long roads, Pacific weather, and the islands I now call home.

RURAL QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA · 2008

The first
open road.

Australia was the first stamp in my first passport. I arrived on a working holiday in 2008 with very little money and almost no English—only the feeling that I needed to see what waited beyond the life I knew.

In rural Queensland, I worked on farms, slept in a tent, and shared an old Ford Falcon wagon with friends. The days were physical and uncertain. At night, the stars appeared above us with a clarity that made the wide, quiet country feel even larger.

We did not have much, but life felt open. That season gave me a lasting sense of freedom—the kind that belongs to youth, long roads, and not knowing exactly where you will sleep next. Part of me has been looking back toward Australia ever since. One day, I want to follow that road again.

It began outside the city. I would pull over, open the tripod, and wait for my eyes to adjust. The less light there was, the more clearly the landscape began to speak.

BEHIND DARK STARRY NIGHTS

A memory
of looking up.

This began before the camera.

I grew up in Seoul, where city light made a clear night sky feel distant. In 2004, during military service in Gangwon, I stood night watch beneath dark rural skies. Shooting stars crossed those long watches often. I did not know it then, but those hours became one of the first roots of this diary.

Years later, photography gave me a reason to leave the lights behind again. Road trips carried me through American deserts; life in Hawaiʻi brought wind, clouds, water, and island nights into the same search. The photographs preserve the sky, but this site keeps the rest of the memory too—the drive, the waiting, the weather, and the person I was when I stood there.

Dark Starry Nights is not a record of perfect conditions. It is a personal archive of the journeys that kept returning me to that first feeling under the sky.

LOOKING BEFORE SHOOTING

Before the stars, there was the habit of standing still and learning how a place holds light.

SETTING THE FRAME

Most photographs begin long before the shutter—with walking, looking, and deciding to stay.

THE ROAD WIDENS

The camera gave me a reason to stop at places that once felt impossibly far away.

AN EARLY FIELD NOTE

Not every encounter asked for a tripod. Some asked for distance—and better judgment.

WONDER CAN BE PLAYFUL

Long before the journal had a name, I was learning that a night photograph could carry humor as well as wonder.
